Needles and hooks to use for different weight yarns:
For fine yarns like 1 ply and 2 ply laceweight or 3 ply, which is often used for baby clothes, use 2-3mm needle or hook.
For 4 ply or American 'Sports Weight', try using 3.25mm hook or needle but to achieve the correct tension, it could take between a 3-4mm needle or hook. Using 4 ply doubled in theory will create a double knitting weight yarn
Double Knitting, DK or American 'Light Worsted' is probably the most widely used yarn of all as it's medium weight. A 4mm needle or hook will be the usual size but using between 3.5-4.5mm could achieve the correct tension. Using a DK yarn doubled will in theory achieve an Aran weight yarn.
Aran or American 'Worsted' or 'Fisherman' is the next heaviest yarn and usually knits or crochets on a 5mm needle or hook or between 4-5.5mm to achieve the correct tension.
